For years, my professional life focused on transforming complex public systems. As a project manager working with state and federal agencies across the U.S., I specialized in building digital platforms that helped people access housing, energy, and disaster relief. But something shifted when I began spending more time in Finland — where my husband is from — and I saw how public infrastructure and personal storytelling could come together to create something deeper: experiences that connect travelers not just to places, but to people, values, and ways of life.

A Different Kind of System Design
When I first arrived in Finland over a decade ago, I was fascinated by how everyday systems — like public transit, libraries, and sauna culture — revealed the country’s priorities: simplicity, functionality, and trust. I didn’t realize it then, but I was slowly moving from designing digital workflows to designing moments of connection. Whether I was helping organize our wedding week (a beautiful blend of Finnish and New England traditions) or taking long drives through the Finnish countryside, I began curating experiences that reflected both logistical clarity and emotional depth.
From SharePoint to Storytelling
I still love structure — I’m a certified PMP project manager, after all. But what lights me up is what happens within the structure — the local markets, hidden history, family-run vineyards, and quirky cultural events. That’s why I launched Mike Sylvia Consulting and joined Fora Travel, a platform that empowers travel advisors to create personalized, insider-style experiences.
My work now blends decades of project leadership with creative storytelling and cultural research. Whether I’m building AI-powered maps, shooting Reels on location, or blogging about how Finnish rye reflects a country’s identity, I help travelers go beyond the obvious — and connect with real people and real places.
